Giarratana
"Giarratana... your art is consecrated by history / and it delivers you to our curious eyes."
Rich in waters, Giarratana, known for good reason as the "Perla degli Iblei”", is a village where peasant and agro-silvopastoral traditions are present and lived with great popular participation, like the religious manifestations that see at their center the Baroque churches of S. Antonio Abate and San Bartolomeo, as well as the neo-classical Chiesa Madre-Maria SS Annunziata and S. Giuseppe e della Madonna delle Grazie. The historic center rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake constitutes a real and proper "Open-Air Museum" where the customs, costumes and traditions of Giarratana people are present. The Museo Ibleo dell’emigrazione is of particular interest.
Near Monte Lauro, overlooking the inhabited area, important archaeological sites such as ancient Kasmenai and the medieval village of Terravecchia called the medieval Pompeii are visible.
Among the precious agricultural products the Giarratana onion stands out. The territory of the municipality extends from the slopes of the ancient Monte Lauro volcano to the lake of Santa Rosalia, created by the waters of the Irmino river. Not to be missed is a bike trip to the Santa Rosalia lake.
