Militello Val di Catania

In the year 1614, Don Francesco Branciforte, during some works in his garden in Militello, discovered some human bones, somewhat larger than the common ones. Later, in 1632, while digging near the Lémbasi river a four palms long leg bone was found, extraordinarily thick and a little less than a column of trabacca, which without a doubt belonged to a Giant, as the illustrious historian Pietro Carrera wrote. This confirmed the widespread opinion that Sicily in prehistoric times was inhabited by giants. -

Militello, with its artistic treasures and historical testimonies present, is a city declared "World Heritage" and included in the UNESCO list of "The Late Baroque Cities of Val di Noto". The city, whose toponym derives from the Latin "Militum Tellus" (soldier's land) was founded by the Roman consul Marcello.

There are numerous late baroque churches and historical palaces: from the monumental Chiesa di San Benedetto, to the Chiesa Madre di San Nicolò with a lava stone staircase, to the Oratorio di Santa Maria della Catena, to the Chiesa di Santa Maria la Vetere, to Santa Maria della Valle and finally the Oratorio dell’Angelo. Not less important are the noble palaces such as the Palazzo Baldanza, Palazzo Majorana, Palazzo Reforgiato and Palazzo Rametta Reburdone.

A visit to all these wonders requires a lot of energy, so the famous almond sweets and the mustard of figs are mandatory for a good recovery. So, regenerated physically and mentally, an excursion to the Ossena waterfalls can be the seal of an intense and exciting day.

The HUB of Militello Val di Catania is interested in the "La Via dei Laghi" route and it is the arrival point of stage n° 2 coming from Scordia (10 km and 316 meters of difference in height). From Militello Val di Catania (GATE at the Municipal Villa), stage n° 3 then leaves to reach the POINT of Licodia Eubea located in the Villa Comunale. 21 km with 340 meters of difference in height.
